Food technology company LiberEat has called for food businesses to go beyond compliance to actively protect consumers against allergens after becoming a certified B Corporation.
The move sees LiberEat join a global community of companies committing to pursue a sustainable purpose as well as profit through B Corp certification, and comes as high-profile allergen-related recalls and regulatory changes are putting growing pressure on the food industry to strengthen safety standards and reduce risks.
Barry Leaper, Founder and CEO of LiberEat, commented: “With food safety under the spotlight more than ever, companies must go beyond compliance to actively protect consumers. At LiberEat, we’ve always championed this mission and now, our commitment has been recognised with B Corp Certification.
“For us, being a B Corporation holds a huge amount of weight and is far more than a marketing badge; it is validation of our dedication to making the food industry safer, smarter and more accountable, and will continue to guide our decision-making as we enter our next stage of business growth.”
He added that achieving this new certification is the first in a series of game-changing developments for LiberEat, with forthcoming plans to champion food safety and prevent errors before they reach consumers beyond the UK through new partnerships with global brands.
Barry founded LiberEat in 2016 to make food safer for everyone – a mission he became passionate about after experiencing the difficulty food allergies can cause when shopping and dining in restaurants through his wife and mother’s dietary requirements.
The company provides innovative technology to restaurant chains, caterers, supermarkets, and food producers and manufacturers, which detects errors in allergen or ingredient information before they reach the consumer – preventing serious harm, costly recalls and reputational damage.
“For consumers, and especially those with food allergies and intolerances, the data on something like a restaurant menu, website, app, food label or food order is the only information they can rely on, so it absolutely has to be accurate,” continued Barry.
“You’d hope this was the case given growing pressure on the food industry to strengthen safety standards and reduce risks, however LiberEat’s technology has detected thousands of errors over the last year-and-a-half.”
Specifically, LiberEat has detected 3,600 errors in the past eighteen months, confirmed Barry.
By working with LiberEat, food businesses benefit from stronger compliance, improved consumer confidence and now, being a B Corporation, an even more trusted partner committed to ethical business as well as food safety.
