Stainless hammer mill provides high-rate size reduction

A new Hammerhead™ Hammer Mill, model HM-141-SS, from Munson Machinery reduces friable and fibrous materials at high rates to uniform particle sizes from coarse to fine.

High-shear, low-resistance pulverising action produced by hammer tips rotating at speeds up to 275 mph reduces high volumes of material while using less power per unit of output than comparable mills. A 760 mm infeed throat directs material into the path of centrifugal-force-driven hammers, which throw the material against breaker-plate ridges in the feed section and then against perforated bed screens. Material meeting the specified particle size exits through the screens.

A 55 kW motor drives the shaft, integral hammer discs, disc pins and hammers at 1,800 to 3,600 rpm, producing hammer-tip speeds of 1,100 to 7,300 m/min, even under heavy loads. The mill can process a broad range of solid materials including animal feed, grain, biomass, wood chips, composites and other friable and semi-friable bulk products.

Particle size is controlled by screen aperture size. In addition to a lower 180-degree cylindrical screen, the mill incorporates a 90-degree screen in the hinged upper case, increasing total screen area and capacity by 50 percent.

Proprietary hardened hammers can be reversed end-to-end and side-to-side, allowing all four cutting edges to be used before replacement. A removable pin recessed within a hardened-steel guard permits rapid removal of the secondary shafts, hammers and spacers for servicing.

The stainless-steel, heavy-gauge housing provides stiffness, alignment and durability for applications involving high impact and loads. The feed intake, welded to the upper case and bolted to the lower case, provides a high-integrity connection between the loading hopper and mill intake. Material can be discharged pneumatically or by gravity.

A large, safety-interlocked door provides rapid, unobstructed access to the mill case interior for inspection and maintenance.

Other size reduction equipment manufactured by the company includes Screen Classifying Cutters, Shredders, Lump Breakers, Knife Cutters, Pin Mills and Attrition Mills. Mixing equipment offered includes Ribbon/Paddle/Plough Blenders, Rotary Batch Mixers, Rotary Continuous Blenders, Vee Cone Blenders, Fluidised Bed Mixers and Variable Intensity Blenders.
