Kemtile has installed a 10,000m2 flooring system at a food manufacturing business in Oldham in partnership with leading food manufacturing construction service provider DDK Projects Limited.
DDK were appointed by Inspired Global Cuisine to deliver a 375,000 sq ft state of the art ready meal facility – the largest in Europe – including a 150,000 sq ft freezer warehouse and 150,000 sq ft production facility, part of a total £90m investment in the plant.
Delivered through a Design & Build setup, the project required close coordination from early discovery and detailed design through to construction and commissioning, ensuring the facility was ready to support operational performance from day one.
Kemtile were called in by DDK to work their magic on the flooring systems throughout as a trusted supply chain partner. Kemtile and DDK have joined forces before on high-quality food factory projects from concept to completion across the UK.
Kemtile specified high-performance Stonclad® UR – from parent manufacturers Stonhard – a polyurethane mortar flooring product designed for food and beverage environments needing fast-track delivery.
For expansive areas of warehouse and production flooring Stonclad UR is the preferred option to traditional hand-trowelled systems which take much longer to install. Stonclad UR ticks all boxes from a technical point, providing a long-lasting robust hygienic floor finish. It allows for a quick turnaround whilst still delivering the quality, durability, seamless finish, chemical and slip resistance properties of a resin floor.
Kemtile has proven expertise in the ready meals sector – they have been established over 40 years in the food and beverage market – and delivered a robust floor at scale in this ambitious new facility on time and on budget.
Tim Dixon, DDK Managing Director commented:
“One of the key challenges was the scale and programme of the flooring works,” he said.
“Enabling larger areas of flooring to be installed within a shorter timeframe without compromising on quality was a key deliverable. Kemtile worked closely with the wider project team to ensure the flooring installation was delivered safely, efficiently and to the high standards required for a food manufacturing environment.”
He added: “We’re incredibly proud of what the team, client and our supply chain partners have achieved together.”
The work was completed over four months in a series of stages. Akeel Ahmed from Kemtile commented: “We have a very positive working relationship with DDK and again we collaborated to provide a fit for purpose floor for a multi-national client producing 100 million ready meals a year.
“It was a challenging project size-wise. DDK trusted our advice and experience. Four decades in the market means we have seen it all and laid flooring to most briefs. It’s always a pleasure to work with Tim, Sarah and the whole team.”
Kemtile regularly advises clients on complete floor systems, providing a one-stop shop for site surveys, specification, design, groundworks, drainage, site supervision, health and safety compliance and installation.
