Recyclable bio-based coatings for paper packaging

We are functionalizing the barrier characteristics of bio-based coatings for paper packaging so that they can satisfy the level of product protection required and comply with the requirements of the recycling process. To do so, we are working with the Papiertechnische Stiftung (German Paper Technology Institute) as part of the interdisciplinary team on the Cooperative Industrial Research (IGF) project “BiPaRe” – BioPaperRecycling – which began in 2021. Our focus is the systematic analysis of the interference potential of the coatings subject to various chemical polymer matrices. On the basis of these findings, we are developing a generally applicable laboratory test method to supplement current recyclability test methods. The results of the project will produce a data matrix showing the influence of various material parameters on recyclability. The recommendations for action for holistic product development, including recyclability, that are developed over the course of the project should enable SMEs to increase their sales using sustainable product variants as alternatives to traditional, plastic-based packaging materials.
