Food for Biodiversity’ and the ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ Initiative announce a further step in their strategic partnership: Since the beginning of 2024, companies in the food sector can apply for dual membership. The two organisations in Germany and Europe are committed to making economic activity more biodiversity-friendly and thus protecting biodiversity. The cooperation is intended to promote the commitment of members and make participation in both organisations more accessible.
“I am delighted that bridges have been built here and that cooperation between the two organisations is being intensified,” says Peter Zens, Chairman of ‘Food for Biodiversity’ and board member of the ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ initiative. “Together, we have already been able to launch effective programmes and activities that have a positive impact on the environment and raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity.”
Preserving ecosystem services: an international conference for the food sector
On 13th and 14th November 2024, ‘Food for Biodiversity’ will host its first international conference in Berlin, aimed at actors from the European food sector. Hardly any other industry is as dependent on intact ecosystems and their services as the food sector. But overexploitation, pollution, habitat destruction and the climate crisis have been leading to a steady increase in species extinction for years. The annual loss of ecosystem services is estimated at six trillion U.S. dollars (6,000,000,000,000 US $) according to a study conducted by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and NABU (Naturschutzbund). So how can the food sector respond to this trend and develop more sustainable strategies for the future? What levers can be used to better protect ecosystems? These and other questions will be discussed through a mix of key notes, presentations and discussion forums at the conference.
Joint commitment to biodiversity
The ‘Food for Biodiversity’ initiative is committed to protecting biodiversity and contributing to the transformation of current food systems into sustainable and future-proof systems. Founded in 2021, the association currently has 30 members from various areas of the food sector: companies, environmental associations, standard organisations and scientific. Members support the objectives of the association and, within their means, contribute to implementing criteria for the protection and promotion of biodiversity (basic set) along the supply chain in purchasing and standard specifications.
The activities of the cross-industry business network ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ are aimed at building up biodiversity-specific expertise within companies and promoting exchange with experts. The initiative also aims to achieve greater relevance for a sustainable economy in dialog with politics and science.
