A new large-scale clinical study confirms the role of Promunel® in supporting immune health

A new large-scale clinical study confirms the role of Promunel® in supporting immune health by preventing seasonal discomfort and reducing the incidence of upper respiratory discomforts.

Seasonal discomfort, often manifesting as upper respiratory discomfort can impact individuals’ quality of life. It can disrupt daily routines and affect productivity and overall well-being.

A new clinical study—double-blind, randomised, parallel, and placebo-controlled—demonstrates the positive impact of Promunel®, a propolis extract obtained through the patented Multi Dynamic Extraction (M.E.D® ) process, in promoting respiratory comfort during seasonal challenges. Conducted
from autumn to spring, the study evaluates the effectiveness of supplementation in maintaining upper respiratory health in a 295-subject population during 12 weeks. The validated Wisconsin Upper Respiratory Symptom Survey (WURSS-24) is filled daily. Subjects are supplemented with 400mg of Promunel® daily, split into two capsules: one at breakfast and one at dinner.

The study’s primary outcome focuses on the incid

ence and management of seasonal respiratory discomfort. Supplementation with Promunel® significantly reduces the number of subjects experiencing upper respiratory discomfort by 26% over the studied period, compared to placebo. Moreover, subjects who supplement with Promunel® experience one-third fewer episodes of respiratory discomfort than those in the placebo group (p<0.05).

Additionally, the risk of contracting respiratory discomfort over the autumn to spring period is evaluated: Promunel® supplementation delays the onset of seasonal discomforts, leading to a 31% reduction (p<0.05) in the risk of experiencing these events, as measured by hasard ratio. This indicates a significant decrease in the probability of respiratory discomfort events compared to the placebo group.

Furthermore, the study provides insights into the duration of discomfort for those who do experience symptoms. Among subjects supplemented with Promunel®, the average duration of upper respiratory discomforts is reduced by 34% (p<0.05), with the peak duration notably shorter.

Key findings from the study include:

• Reduction in the incidence of upper respiratory discomfort by 26%

• Shortening of the duration of discomfort episodes by 34%

• Support in delaying the onset of seasonal challenges with a 31% lower risk of experiencing upper respiratory discomfort.

A research program aims to fully characterise the propolis extract and understand the kinetics of metabolisation and the biomarkers, conducted preliminarily to this large-scale study. The nutrikinetic study conducted on 10 subjects determines the absorption profile by following the biomarkers in plasma over 24 hours. Following the excretion of the biomarkers in urine, the bioavailability of phenolic compounds from Promunel® is established above 70%.

“These new data support Fytexia’s ambition to elevate propolis from a traditional product into a central ingredient in dietary supplements, aiming to set Promunel® as a benchmark for immune health support and respiratory comfort”, says Dr. Julien Cases, Chief Scientific Officer at Fytexia.
